Atletico Madrid 2-0 Man Utd: behind after a minute again
Atletico Madrid 2-0 Man Utd. Barrios scored inside a minute, Yoro was sent off and Lookman finished it. Five without a win now, and Dan's had enough of the excuses.
I'd barely sat down with a brew and we were already losing. Inside the first minute, Baena whipped a cross in, Barrios scored, and that was the plan for the night gone before most of us had even settled. Atletico Madrid 2-0 Man Utd, and that's five games without a win now across everything.
The worst possible start
You can't give a side like Atlético a goal start in their own ground, it's just about the one thing you can't do. They're happy to sit in, let you have the ball and wait for you to make a mistake, and when they're already ahead you're playing straight into their hands. That's exactly how the rest of the night went, with us passing it about in front of them and them not looking bothered in the slightest.
To be fair, we weren't completely hopeless after that. Baleba got his first start and I thought he looked like he belonged, and there were spells where we got the ball into decent areas. We just didn't do anything with it when we got there, and against a side like this you don't get many chances to put it right.
Yoro's red
Then, with about a quarter of an hour left, Yoro got sent off. He brought Jonathan David down as the last man, the referee went to the screen and gave him a straight red for denying a goalscoring chance, and I'm still not sure about it. It looked soft to me, and I wasn't the only one saying so, but you could see how they got there.
A few minutes later Lammens saved from David and Lookman tapped in the rebound, and that was that.
Five without a win
The thing that worries me is it isn't one bad night, it's a pattern now. We threw away a lead against ten men at the weekend, we were behind inside a minute tonight, and we're five games without a win. This is meant to be our worst domestic start in 40 years, and you can feel it, because every game now we seem to find a new way to lose or draw.
I want to back Carrick, I really do, but at some point it's not good enough to say we're unlucky. Atlético didn't have to be brilliant tonight. They just had to wait for us to make a mess of it, and we did.
If you missed it, here's what I made of the Spurs draw, and with Leeds next, here's why that one always matters.
Dan's Verdict: you can lose in Madrid, but going a goal down inside a minute is the kind of mistake a team at this level shouldn't keep making.
Was Yoro's red card a red for you, or was it as soft as it looked?
