Leeds 1-1 Man Utd: no striker and no answer after the break

Leeds 1-1 Man Utd at Elland Road. Mbeumo scored, Calvert-Lewin equalised from a corner, and a side with no centre-forward never looked like winning it.

Leeds 1-1 Man Utd: no striker and no answer after the break

Leeds 1-1 Man Utd, and the preview called it on the nose. Being right about a draw at Elland Road gives me no pleasure at all, because of how we got it. We led at half-time, Leeds were the better side for the whole of the second half, and we spent that half hanging on rather than looking for a second.

There's a short version of this game. With no recognised striker fit, Mbeumo led the line with Bruno Fernandes behind him, Mbeumo scored a good goal on 35 minutes, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin equalised from a corner six minutes after the restart. Everything else is detail. Here are the three bits of detail that matter.

1. The goal was the best thing we've done in weeks. Youri Tielemans got down the right and put a low ball across, and Mbeumo guided it into the bottom corner first time. It was a proper move, quick and direct, and Tielemans was the best player on the pitch in the first half. A minute later Mbeumo headed a Tielemans cross wide when he should have hit the target, and that's the moment that hurts looking back. Two up at the break and it's a different afternoon. Lammens had already kept it level by clawing an Elvedi header away from the top corner, so we weren't exactly cruising before the goal either.

2. Another lead gone at the moment that matters. Leeds took a corner, Tarik Muharemović won the first header, and Calvert-Lewin got to it first and finished. One header and one second ball, and we'd thrown away the lead. It's the same story as Solanke in stoppage time against Spurs and Barrios inside a minute in Madrid. Different game every time, same lapse every time. We don't defend the moment that decides the match.

3. The half-time change took something out of the back line. Lisandro Martínez went off at the break, Noussair Mazraoui came on, and from then on Leeds had us pinned back. We were down to counter-attacks for most of the second half. Mason Mount came on for Carlos Baleba, Matheus Cunha came on for Tielemans late on, and neither change made us look more likely to score. Leeds had the last real chance as well: in the final minutes Anton Stach's shot beat Lammens, hit a defender, and Lammens recovered it.

The injury list is long, with Shaw and Mainoo missing again, and nobody denies that. But the answer was to ask Mbeumo, a wide forward, to play as a lone striker, and that means we had nobody whose job is to run in behind and stretch Leeds. Carrick has had since Šeško's injury to find a plan for this, and this was it.

Seven points from seven league games. Six without a win in all competitions. Carrick said in his press conference that it's "not about me", but there are no new excuses left in that run. A point at Elland Road isn't a disaster on its own, given what this fixture is and how Leeds have played this season. It's the fact that a point away from home now feels like the best we could have hoped for. That's where the bar is in October, and it's on the floor.

Correction, 18 October 2026: an earlier version said Bruno Fernandes played up front (he played behind Mbeumo), described Stach's late chance wrongly, and quoted Carrick in a way we couldn't verify. Those lines have been fixed or removed.
